Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Fireplace Services in New York City: What to Know First
We service HeatShield fireplace systems across New York City, from gas inserts in Park Slope brownstones to wood-burning units in Riverdale co-ops. Most HeatShield repairs and cleanings in NYC run between $195 and $1,200 depending on what the camera finds, and every job gets a written price before work starts. If you own a HeatShield fireplace, insert, or liner system and live anywhere in the five boroughs, call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll put a technician who knows this brand on it.
This page is for New York City homeowners with a HeatShield product who want specifics, not a sales pitch. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider. That means we work on their systems every week but we don’t answer to them. We answer to the flue wall in front of the camera and to you.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
HeatShield makes fireplace components and liner repair systems. Their ceramic refractory coatings and joint sealants are good products. But like anything that lives inside a chimney, they fail in predictable ways, especially in New York City’s specific climate. Here’s what we actually see on jobs:
- The CeCure refractory liner delaminates at the smoke chamber shoulder. HeatShield’s CeCure system applies a ceramic coating over existing clay flue tiles. In NYC brownstones and prewar apartments, the flue often shifts slightly at the smoke chamber transition, and that movement cracks the coating. We camera the flue, find the delamination point, and re-apply the coating system after prepping the substrate properly. This is the single most common HeatShield repair we do in the city.
- SmokeSert joint sealant fails at tile offsets. Older chimneys in Manhattan and Brooklyn frequent have offset flue tiles, and the HeatShield SmokeSert sealant used between those tiles can separate over years of thermal cycling. NYC heating season runs hard from November through March. Those expansion cycles are what kill the sealant, not bad product. We find the failed joints on camera, then patch and reseal them with HeatShield-specified materials.
- FireGuard coating thins out around the damper frame on gas fireplace conversions. When a NYC homeowner converts a wood-burning fireplace to gas, the HeatShield FireGuard coating often wasn’t applied thick enough around the damper frame during the original install. High heat from gas logs concentrates there. We inspect that zone specifically on every HeatShield gas conversion service call, because it’s the spot most other companies skip.
- HeatShield panels in prefab fireplaces develop hairline cracks from NYC apartment settling. Prefabricated HeatShield fireboxes installed in high-rise and mid-rise buildings in Manhattan and Queens shift as the building settles. Those micro-movements produce hairline cracks in the refractory panels. The cracks aren’t structural in every case, but they can let heat reach combustible framing. We photograph them, measure them, and tell you plainly whether it’s a replace-now or monitor-it situation.
- Insert surrounds lose their seal against older masonry, especially in humid basement installs. HeatShield fireplace inserts in garden-level apartments and brownstone basements fight moisture constantly. The surround seal fails, air leaks around the unit, and efficiency drops. We see this constantly in Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, and Harlem basement units. The fix is removing the old sealant, cleaning the masonry face, and re-sealing with a product rated for the HeatShield insert’s operating temperature.
Our HeatShield Fireplace Services Process

Every HeatShield job we run in New York City follows the same six steps. No shortcuts, no surprises.
- 1
You call, a live person answers. We hear what your fireplace is doing (or not doing). We tell you the service call fee and what it includes. It’s on the phone, in dollars, before we hang up.
- 2
We send a named technician. Background-checked, uniformed, license number on file. You get a text when they’re heading your way.
- 3
Camera inspection first. NFPA 211 Level 2. The camera goes down the flue and through the firebox before anyone touches a wrench. We look specifically at HeatShield coating thickness, panel condition, seal integrity, and damper function.
- 4
We show you the footage. You see what we see. We point to the delamination or the cracked panel and tell you what it means. Corrine Halstead still reviews camera footage with customers herself on complex HeatShield repairs. The camera doesn’t soften what it finds. Neither do we.
- 5
Written price, written scope, written warranty before work starts. If a part can be OEM, we price it OEM. If a quality aftermarket part does the same job for hundreds less, we tell you and let you decide. No work begins until you approve the number on the page.
- 6
Repair, test, document. We do the work, fire or test the system, then hand you a documented photo record of everything we did. That’s Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, and we’ve done it on every job since 2009.

AfterWhat HeatShield Fireplace Services Costs in New York City
Here’s what you’ll pay for typical HeatShield work in New York City. These are real ranges we quote every week:
- HeatShield CeCure liner repair (single delamination point): $450-$800

Every quote is written, and we never ask for a cent until you’ve approved the line items. Call (980) 580-8641 for a free estimate on your HeatShield system.
Why New York City Homeowners Call Emberly Chimney Cleaners for HeatShield Work

Nobody in New York City owns just a fireplace. They own a fireplace attached to a chimney attached to a building with neighbors on three sides. That changes the stakes. We’ve inspected and cleaned 38,000-plus chimneys since 2009, and a big share of those were in NYC’s high-density housing stock. We know what a HeatShield system looks like after ten years in a Brooklyn brownstone, and we know what it looks like after three years in a Queens high-rise. They’re different.
When a HeatShield part isn’t the right answer, we don’t force it. We work with DuraFlex and Gelco components too, and we’ll tell you when a competitor’s product fits your flue better than a HeatShield patch. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every HeatShield job, and we’ll give you a free second opinion on any written estimate you bring us. Bring us the quote. We’ll show you the camera footage. You’ll know which one is honest.
FAQs
No, not when the work is done with manufacturer-specified materials and documented. We use HeatShield-compatible products and provide a photo record of every step, which is exactly what warranty claims require. We can’t speak for the manufacturer, but our documentation has held up in warranty disputes before.
Most HeatShield service calls in New York City are scheduled within three to five business days. If you have an active leak or visible damage, tell the person who answers the phone and we’ll work it in sooner. We don’t promise same-day service, but we do answer the phone 24/7.
If the camera shows delamination on one or two points, repair is usually the right call. If the coating has failed across more than a third of the flue or the underlying tiles are crumbling, replacement with a new liner (often DuraFlex) makes more financial sense. We’ll show you the footage and let you decide with real numbers in front of you.
Yes. We service HeatShield gas fireplace inserts across the city, from millivolt systems in older apartments to newer electronic ignition units. Parts availability varies by model, and we’ll tell you upfront if a component is backordered before we schedule the repair.
If you’re seeing white flaking inside the firebox, noticing a draft even with the damper closed, or smelling smoke in the room after the fire’s out, there’s likely more than soot involved. A camera inspection answers the question definitively. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll book the inspection, show you the footage, and give you a written price for whatever the camera finds.
