Gelco Chimney Cleaning Service Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why New York City Homeowners Choose Gelco Chimney Cleaning

Emberly Chimney Cleaners provides independent Gelco chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair service throughout New York City, from Park Slope brownstones to Riverdale co-ops. While we focus on New York, homeowners seeking Gelco service in Los Angeles can find specialized providers in that market. We service Gelco 316Ti flexible liners, Gelco Hybrid Liner Systems, Gelco direct vent caps, and Gelco multi-flue caps, and we do it without manufacturer authorization. That matters because our Gelco expertise comes from field teardowns and failure analysis across thousands of New York City chimneys, not from a training manual. Call (980) 580-8641 for a written price before any work starts.

Here’s what separates our Gelco work from every other sweep in the five boroughs. Most companies in New York City treat a Gelco liner as just another tube in the flue. We know the specific failure points on each Gelco product line: where the 316Ti pinholes under acidic creosote, why hybrid liners draft-reverse in narrow townhouse flues, and what happens when a multi-flue cap’s mesh screen catches mortar droppings during repointing. Corrine Halstead, our owner, built this company on showing customers the camera footage before talking price. The camera doesn’t soften what it finds. Neither do we.

One thing to understand up front: we are not a Gelco dealer, not a Gelco authorized contractor, and not affiliated with Gelco in any way. We are an independent Gelco service provider. That independence is exactly why we can tell you when a Gelco part is worth keeping and when it should come out.

Why Trust Emberly Chimney Cleaners for Your Gelco Chimney Cleaning?

Our technicians have spent years pulling Gelco liners apart in New York City’s specific housing stock: pre-war brownstones with original brick flues, 1920s co-ops converted from coal to oil to gas, and gut renovations where a modern Gelco liner was dropped into a masonry stack built when Teddy Roosevelt was president. We know which Gelco products hold up in New York City’s conditions and which ones fail early. That knowledge comes from documenting 38,000+ chimney inspections and cleanings since 2009, every one with a written price before work started and a photo record when it was done.

Every Gelco service call follows the same rule. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires a camera-scan inspection and documented photo record on every visit. You see exactly what we see: the liner walls, the crown, the cap, the smoke chamber. If your Gelco liner has pinholes, you’ll see them on screen before we quote a repair. If it’s clean, you’ll see that too, and we’ll say so plainly. Nothing is recommended without camera evidence you can inspect yourself.

Corrine grew up in Inwood, at the northern tip of Manhattan, where older apartment buildings and attached brownstones meant chimneys were everywhere and mostly ignored. She studied building trades technology at Bronx Community College before spending years working her way through inspection and cleaning work across all five boroughs. Today she runs Emberly Chimney Cleaners, and she still shows customers the camera footage herself before any conversation about price begins.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in New York City

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in New York City

These are the Gelco failures we see repeatedly across New York City. If you own a Gelco liner or cap, here’s what to inspect.

  • Pinhole corrosion in Gelco 316Ti flexible liners. When a wood stove is damped too low, creosote stays wet and acidic inside the liner. That acid eats through 316Ti stainless at the lower third of the liner, where the flue gases cool and condense. We saw this in a Park Slope brownstone where a new Gelco 316Ti liner had been installed without insulation wrap. Within two seasons, acidic creosote from a converted wood stove had eaten pinholes through the liner’s lower third. We removed the failed section, installed a properly wrapped UL-listed replacement, and sealed the flue tile crown, fixing the draft and eliminating the smell.
  • Draft reversal and soot spillage in Gelco Hybrid Liner Systems. The hybrid liner’s double-wall design adds rigidity, but if it’s undersized for the flue, it can choke the draft in narrow pre-war townhouse flues. The symptom is soot spilling into the room when the fireplace is lit and a backdraft smell the morning after. Proper sizing matters more than the liner brand.
  • Condensation rot at the Gelco liner-to-flue tile transition. Missing insulation wrap is the usual culprit. Without the wrap, warm flue gas hits the cold masonry at the transition point, condenses, and rots the liner from the outside in. We find this in uninsulated New York City chimneys where the liner was dropped in as a quick fix rather than a full system.
  • Mesh screen clogging on Gelco multi-flue caps. During repointing, mortar droppings fall into the cap’s mesh and clog it. The cap stops venting, draft suffers, and the fireplace smokes. We clean and, when the mesh has corroded from salt air in Staten Island, Red Hook, Bay Ridge, or the Rockaways, we replace the cap with a proper Gelco or equivalent unit.
  • Corrosion at the Gelco direct vent termination cap. In coastal New York City neighborhoods, salt air works on the cap’s fasteners and mesh. The cap rusts through where the flue gases exit, and the termination point leaks. It’s a simple fix when caught early; ignored, it lets water into the flue and accelerates liner damage below.

Gelco Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We use OEM Gelco parts only when the liner or cap is still under a transferable warranty and the part is available. Otherwise, we install UL-listed aftermarket equivalents that match or exceed the original spec. That’s not a compromise; it’s honest parts selection. Some Gelco components are excellent. Others wear out faster than quality aftermarket alternatives, especially in New York City’s freeze-thaw cycles and coastal salt air, a challenge also familiar to providers of Gelco service in San Jose.

For liners with more than two perforations or widespread thinning, we recommend full replacement rather than patching. Patching a Swiss-cheese liner is throwing money at a part that’s already failed. We’ll show you the camera footage and let you decide, but our written recommendation will state plainly when repair is no longer worth it. Call (980) 580-8641 for a written price.

Our Gelco Service Process - Step by Step

Our Gelco Service Process - Step by Step
  1. 1
Camera-scan diagnosis. We run a camera down the flue and document every inch of your Gelco liner, cap, and crown. You see the footage as we shoot it. Nothing is hidden.
  2. 2
Written price and scope. Before any work starts, you get a written price, written scope, and written warranty. Haven Standard Clause 1: have it in writing. Never a verbal quote.
  3. 3
Repair or install. We remove failed Gelco sections, install properly wrapped UL-listed replacements when needed, or perform cap replacement and creosote removal if that’s what the camera showed. Chimney waterproofing is done at this stage when the masonry needs it.
  4. 4
Post-work camera verification. We run the camera again after the work. You see the finished result, not just our word for it.
  5. 5
Documented photo record and warranty. You walk away with photos, camera footage, written scope, and written warranty. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires this on every job, and it’s been our practice since 2009.
