Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The New York City Owner’s Guide
A Gelco flue liner replacement in New York City typically runs $2,400 to $4,800 installed, depending on flue height, roof access, and whether we’re pulling the old liner out of a masonry chase or running a new one through an existing clay tile. We stock Gelco-compatible liner kits on our trucks and can usually complete the swap in one visit. Most owners discover their liner has failed during a Level 2 inspection, after noticing flaking metal in the firebox, or when a neighbor’s roofer points down at the chimney cap and says something that makes them call us.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco’s liner lineup runs in two families: the standard flexible series (GL series, in 4″, 5″, 6″, and 8″ diameters) and the rigid stainless line used in larger fireplaces and boiler flues. The compatibility gotcha most New York City owners hit is connector diameter: a furnace venting through a 4″ Gelco liner often has a 3″ appliance collar, and mixing those without a proper adapter is how you get backdrafting into a brownstone basement. If you’re not sure what you have, look for the stamped model on the liner’s top collar or measure the inside diameter where it exits the cap. We’ll match OEM Gelco when the unit’s still under warranty, and when it isn’t, we quote a stainless 316Ti equivalent that outlasts the factory part in a salt-air borough like Staten Island. Emberly Chimney Cleaners is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we install their components daily and stock Gelco, DuraFlex, and HeatShield parts on the truck.
Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

- Flaking metal or “shredded” liner material in the firebox or on the smoke shelf. This is the liner’s inner wall shedding after years of thermal cycling. Once you see flakes, a pinhole is close behind.
- White corrosion streaks on the exterior of the liner or the cap. Acidic flue gas has been leaking. In New York City’s humid winters, condensation accelerates this faster than in dry climates.
- Backdrafting or a combustion smell in the room after the fire dies down. A cracked liner lets flue gas leak into wall cavities and back into the house instead of drawing up and out.
- Sudden difficulty getting a clean draw on startup. This usually means a liner section has separated or collapsed inward, narrowing the flue path.
- Visible rust staining on walls or ceilings near the chase. That is condensation and flue gas working through the chase lining, which points to liner failure behind the wall.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard New York City single-family home, you’re looking at:
- Gelco-compatible flexible liner, 25 foot or less, direct swap: $2,400 to $3,200 installed
- Longer runs, roof repairs, or chase access problems: $3,800 to $4,800 installed
- Multi-family or boiler flue replacement: quoted per flue after camera review
The range reflects access. A Parkside rowhouse with a straight flue and a ground-level cleanout is the low end. A six-story Riverside Drive co-op with a parapet walk and a 60-foot liner is not. Every quote is written, issued before any work starts, and includes the liner, connectors, cap inspection, and our documented photo record showing the new liner seated and sealed. The warranty is also written on that quote. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard: you will not be asked to sign anything that doesn’t already include a written price, written scope, and written warranty.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the firebox for flakes, look at the visible liner from the cap (binoculars work), and read the model stamp if you can reach it. What you should not do is climb onto a New York City roof, detach a 40-pound liner, or pull it through a masonry chase without a second person and a plan for dust control that won’t coat every apartment below. Liners under tension can spring. Old liner sections can wedge in offset flues. If you drop a piece down the flue, you’re now looking at a removal job on top of the replacement. Corrine Halstead has watched this exact failure cost an owner double on a West End Avenue co-op, and the camera made that clear before we touched it. Call (980) 580-8641. We’ll show you the footage first, then quote the work in writing.
FAQs
A Gelco stainless liner in New York City typically lasts 15 to 25 years, but condensation, salt air near the water, and high-humidity winters can shorten that to 12 or less if the liner wasn’t insulated. We see the shortest lifespans in unlined masonry chases where flue gas cools before it reaches the cap. If you want a fix for liner condensation, we’ll quote it. Call (980) 580-8641 for a camera inspection.
Small pinholes at the top section can sometimes be patched with a heat-resistant steel wrap, but once a liner shows flaking or separation in the middle sections, patching buys you months, not years. We will show you the video before recommending either path, and we’ll tell you plainly when a repair can safely wait. Call (980) 580-8641 and ask for a Level 2 camera check.
Most single-family replacements run four to six hours from truck arrival to final photo. Includes setup, removal, new liner install, cap and connector inspection, and the documented record you walk away with. Multi-family jobs take a full day or more, and we’ll put that in the written scope before we book. Call (980) 580-8641 for a real time estimate, not a guess.
We stock Gelco-compatible connectors, caps, adapters, and full liner kits in the common diameters used across New York City homes, so most replacements happen same visit. If we need something unusual, we’ll tell you that on the phone before you take time off work. Call (980) 580-8641 and tell us the model number stamped on your current liner.
Corrine Halstead puts it plainly: “The camera doesn’t soften what it finds. Neither do I.” We’ll show you your liner on screen, quote you a written price, and replace what needs replacing. No push. No phone tag. A live person answers (980) 580-8641 around the clock. Call for a free estimate on your Gelco flue liner replacement in New York City.
