Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Crown Repair: The New York City Owner’s Guide
A Famco chimney crown replacement in New York City typically runs $850 to $1,900 installed, depending on flue count, crown size, and access. We stock Famco-compatible crown forms and most common replacement parts on our trucks, so repair is usually completed in a single visit.
Most owners discover crown failure the same way: water staining on the ceiling below the chimney chase, or crumbling mortar and hairline cracks visible from the roof or sidewalk. The crown is the concrete or metal cap at the very top of the chimney. It takes the brunt of New York weather, and on Famco systems built around factory-formed galvanized or stainless chase tops, the crown and chase cover are often joined – so a failed crown can look a lot like a failed cap until you’re on a ladder looking down at it.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco manufactures chimney caps, chase covers, and crown assemblies for both masonry and factory-built chimney systems. In New York City, we work on three Famco configurations most often: the Famco stainless steel single-flue chase top with an integrated crown lip, the Famco multi-flue crown used on brick chimneys in brownstone row houses, and the Famco galvanized crown system on pre-2000 suburban and outer-borough homes.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most supply sites won’t tell you: Famco crown dimensions are nominal, not exact. You don’t measure the outside edge of your chimney and order that size. You measure the outside dimension of the flue tile or chase opening, then add the overhang – typically 2 to 2.5 inches per side for a proper drip edge. Ordering by chimney dimension instead of flue dimension is the single most common ordering mistake we see from homeowners trying to source their own parts. If you’re unsure, the flue measurement is the number that matters.
OEM Famco crowns are well made. But for most New York City applications, a properly fitted stainless steel crown from Copperfield or Olympia performs identically and sometimes lasts longer in high-salt air near the water. We stock both OEM Famco and the equivalents, and we’ll show you the difference before you pay. The choice is yours, and the installed quote reflects whichever part you select.
Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

- Crumbling mortar or visible cracks in the crown surface. In a New York City freeze-thaw cycle, water works into hairline cracks, freezes, expands, and spalls the crown apart from the inside out. This is not cosmetic. Each winter accelerates it.
- Water staining on ceilings or walls below the chimney line. The crown’s only job is to shed water away from the flue. When it fails, water travels down between the flue and the chase, and it shows up on your ceiling long before you see damage from outside.
- Rust on the chase top or cap base. On Famco systems with a galvanized component, crown failure often begins at the seam between the crown and the metal chase cover. Rust at that joint means water is pooling where it shouldn’t be.
- Chunks of concrete showing up on the roof or in the gutter. That’s the crown spalling. Whatever is on the ground used to be part of your chimney’s water protection, and what remains is worse off than what fell.
- White streaks running down the brick below the crown. That’s efflorescence – dissolved minerals leaching out of the mortar. The water moving through your chimney stack is carrying the crown’s binding material down the face of the brick.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, a Famco crown replacement runs $850 to $1,900 installed. At the low end, a straightforward single-flue crown on a standard brick chimney with easy roof access. At the high end, a multi-flue crown with a custom-fabricated stainless steel chase cover, repaired brick shoulders, and roof access requiring a ladder and harness setup. Most single-family homes land between $1,100 and $1,500.
Every quote includes the crown material, removal of the failed crown, mortar work, installation, and a camera scan of the flue to confirm nothing else failed with it. You’ll get a written price before work starts – that’s Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and we don’t work any other way. If a competitor’s written estimate comes in lower, bring it to us. We’ll give you a free second opinion on whether the scope is actually comparable, and we’ll tell you plainly if it isn’t.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do one thing from the ground, and that’s look for the symptoms above. Rust, staining, efflorescence, fallen debris. What you shouldn’t do is get on a New York City roof with a bag of crown coat and hope for the best. Crown repair requires working at height, often on wet or pitched surfaces, and in the case of Famco chase-mounted crowns, removing and re-securing metal components that are hidden from view until you’re on top of them.
We’ve also seen enough DIY crown patches to know what happens next: the patch fails within two winters because the underlying crown wasn’t sound, and the water damage compounds. A crown is a load-bearing water barrier, not a cosmetic cap. If you’re seeing signs of failure, the affordable move is to have it looked at before the next freeze. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll get you a written price before anyone climbs a ladder.
FAQs
A properly installed Famco crown in New York City typically lasts 15 to 25 years if the original masonry work was sound. The real variable is the freeze-thaw cycle: expect the shorter end of that range on a chimney with poor drainage or a crumbled mortar bed. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll assess what you’re working with.
If the concrete is mostly intact and the damage is surface level, a crown coat – a fiber-reinforced sealant – can add 3 to 5 years of life. But in our experience, by the time a homeowner notices the damage, the underlying crown needs full replacement. We’ll tell you which one you need, and show you the camera footage to back it up.
Most single-flue Famco crown replacements in New York City take 3 to 4 hours including setup, demolition, installation, and cleanup. Multi-flue crowns with chase cover fabrication can run a full day. We’ll give you a written timeline with your quote.
