Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Crown Repair: The New York City Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex crown repair in New York City typically runs $425-$980 installed, depending on crown size and how far the existing crown has broken down. We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most Crown Guard and stainless crown replacements are done in a single visit. Most owners discover a failed crown the ugly way: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, a flaky white residue on the brick below the cap, or a sweep tech pointing at hairline cracks during an annual cleaning. The crown is the concrete or steel slab that seals the top of the chimney around the flue, and when it goes, water gets into places it shouldn’t.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
The crown repair parts we install are compatible with DuraFlex’s stainless steel chimney liner systems, most commonly the DuraFlex SS and DuraFlex Pro series, which are widely used in New York City brownstones and prewar apartment retrofits. If you have the original install paperwork, look for a model tag starting with “DF” followed by a four-digit series number. No paperwork? Measure the flue’s outer diameter with a tape measure; DuraFlex crowns are sized to flue diameters from 4 to 12 inches, and we match to the flue rather than the old crown. A compatibility note worth knowing: the older DuraFlex crowns from before 2014 used a slightly different mounting collar, and a generic aftermarket crown may not seat properly. We source OEM-flight DuraFlex parts through Haven’s buying network, which keeps the price honest compared to what a middleman distributor adds. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we’ve installed and repaired their parts across all five boroughs since 2009.
Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

- White, chalky streaking on the chimney exterior. This is efflorescence, minerals leaching out of the masonry as water penetrates the crown. The stain is a symptom, not the actual damage, which means the crown has already been letting moisture through for a season or more.
- Spalling brick or crumbling mortar near the top course. New York’s freeze-thaw cycles are rough on brick, but when the top three to four feet of brick start shedding layers while the lower chimney looks fine, the crown is usually the entry point. Water gets under the brick face, freezes, and pops the surface off.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. The DuraFlex liner is protecting the flue itself, but a failed crown lets water run down the outside of the chimney structure and pool at the smoke shelf. You’ll see dampness, rust on the damper, or a metallic smell.
- Visible cracks wider than a dime in the crown surface. Hairline cracks happen with age, but when you can see separation wider than a dime, or the crown is dipping toward the flue, it’s no longer shedding water away from the opening. In a New York winter, those cracks fill with water, freeze, and widen.
- A rusted chase cover or staining at the flue collar. On the stainless crown assemblies, rust at the collar where the flue meets the crown means the water seal has failed. Once the seal goes, water follows the flue down into your house.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, an installed DuraFlex-compatible crown replacement runs $425-$980. The spread comes from crown size and material: a standard stainless crown for a 6-inch flue sits on the lower end, while a custom Crown Guard repair on a larger or oddly shaped chimney can push toward the top. What you’ll get from us at any price in that range: the crown part, removal of the old crown, surface prep, installation and sealant, and a written warranty on the work. Every DurFlex crown repair in New York City gets a documented photo record when we’re finished, which is Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, and that record is yours whether you use the warranty or not.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s one safe check you can do from the ground or a roof adjacent: look for the cracks and staining described above, and photograph what you see. That photo is useful when you call us, because it tells us whether this is a standard crown swap or something more involved. Past that point, this job belongs to a trained professional. Crown work means working at height, with the flue opening live beneath you, and the sealant work requires getting the crown surface clean and properly profiled. Most DIY crown attempts in New York City fail because the old crown wasn’t removed properly, and a thin patch over a cracked slab just buys you a season. If you’d rather someone else handle the ladder, call us at (980) 580-8641 for a written price.
FAQs
In New York City’s weather, a properly installed DuraFlex or compatible stainless crown typically lasts 15-20 years before showing serious deterioration. Concrete crowns go sooner, often 10-15 years, because the freeze-thaw cycles between November and March crack the material faster. If your crown was installed with the original liner during a 2000s retrofit, you’re likely due for replacement now.
Small hairline cracks can be sealed with a Crown Guard or comparable sealant, and that’s a $275-$425 repair in New York City. Cracks wider than a dime, any dip in the crown profile, or rust at the flue collar mean repair is a temporary bandage; the crown needs full replacement. We’ll show you camera photos of the crown surface before we recommend either path, and the written price covers exactly what we recommend, nothing more.
A standard DuraFlex-compatible crown replacement takes about 2-3 hours on site for a typical New York City residential chimney. That includes removing the old crown, cleaning the surface, setting the new crown, and sealing it. If the flue collar or chase cover also needs work, add another hour or so, and we’ll tell you that before the job is scheduled, not after we’re on site.
We keep the most common DuraFlex-compatible crown sizes and Crown Guard repair materials on our trucks, covering flues from 6 to 12 inches, so most replacements happen in one visit. Unusual sizes or older 2014-pre collar styles may need a two-day order from our supply network. We’ll know which category you fall into from a phone call and a quick photo of the existing crown.
If your DuraFlex crown is showing its age, call (980) 580-8641. We’ll give you a written price before anyone climbs a ladder, and you’ll get the photo record afterward. That’s how we’ve done every job in New York City since 2009, and Corrine Halstead has held that line since the beginning. The camera doesn’t soften what it finds. Neither do we.
