Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown in New York City: What to Know First
DuraFlex chimney cap and crown work in New York City typically runs $340-$1,900 depending on whether we’re replacing a cap, rebuilding a crown, or coating a multi-flue setup. Most jobs are completed in one visit, with the written price in your hand before any work starts. That price includes a camera scan of the flue so you can see exactly what we found. We’re an independent DuraFlex service provider, not an authorized dealer, and we don’t soft-pedal what the camera shows us. If you own a home in New York City with a DuraFlex liner or cap system, this page is written for you. Call (980) 580-8641 and you’ll get Corrine Halstead or a member of our team on the line, not a voicemail.
How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- DuraFlex 316L liner top-plate corrosion. The top plate where the liner terminates at the crown is the most common failure we see in New York City. Salt air off the harbor and freeze-thaw cycles pitting the stainless. When the top plate corrodes, rain gets between the liner and the flue wall, and you won’t know until the crown cap starts lifting. We replace the top plate and re-secure the cap with stainless fasteners, not the galvanized ones that caused the galvanic corrosion in the first place.
- DuraFlex Pro cap screen clogging. The mesh screen on the Pro series caps is finer than most aftermarket caps. In Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn, that screen traps airborne soot and construction dust fast. We see caps with 60% blockage inside eighteen months. We remove, clean, and re-seat the screen during a sweep, and if it’s torn, we replace the cap body, not just the mesh, because the DuraFlex screen is crimped into the frame.
- Multi-flue crown cracking around the DuraFlex chase. This is the one DuraFlex’s own documentation doesn’t get into. When a clay tile crown was cast around a DuraFlex liner without an expansion joint, the crown cracks at the chase penetration. We see it most on pre-2015 installations in Queens and the Bronx. The fix is crown coating with a flexible elastomeric membrane that moves with the liner instead of fighting it.
- DuraFlex single-wall liner cap separation after high wind. A wind gust through a narrow alley in New York City hits a single-wall cap differently than a suburban install. We regularly find caps that walked off the liner collar after a nor’easter. We re-set the cap and add three stainless self-tapping screws through the collar into the liner, which DuraFlex’s installation guide leaves to installer discretion.
- Cast crown spalling with DuraFlex Hybrid systems. DuraFlex Hybrid, the rigid-flex combination liner, heats and cools at a different rate than the flexible sections. That differential movement transfers stress to the existing crown. If your crown is original to the house and you have a Hybrid liner, we recommend crown coating before the spalling spreads. The coating is about a third the cost of a rebuild and buys you five to eight years.

AfterWhat DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in New York City
Here are the numbers we see most often in New York City. These are ranges, not bids. Your exact price comes after the camera scan, in writing, before work starts.
- DuraFlex cap replacement (single flue): $340-$620
- DuraFlex multi-flue cap: $680-$1,100
- Custom stainless cap over a DuraFlex chase: $1,200-$1,900
- Crown coating (flexible elastomeric, up to 4 flues): $450-$850
- Full crown rebuild with expansion joint: $1,400-$2,400
The variables that move the price: roof access difficulty (walk-up brownstone vs. fire escape vs. full scaffolding), whether the existing cap is salvageable or corroded through, and how many flues share the crown. Every estimate is free. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll put the number in writing.
Why New York City Homeowners Call Emberly Chimney Cleaners for DuraFlex Work

Because we show you the camera footage. Corrine Halstead started running camera scans as the default in 2009, before regulators or insurers asked for it, and that practice became Clause 4 of the Haven Standard. You don’t have to take our word that your crown is cracked. You watch the feed yourself. On a DuraFlex job, we’re doing three things at once: fixing the cap or crown, checking the liner walls for what the cap couldn’t keep out, and documenting everything so you have a record. If we find something the DuraFlex system can’t fix without a liner swap, we carry HeatShield and Gelco products as alternatives. Background-checked techs, uniformed, license number on every page. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise is stamped on every job. If it’s not done right, we make it right.
FAQs
No, not when the cap is installed to DuraFlex’s specification. Most DuraFlex liner warranties cover the liner itself, not the cap or crown components, which are consumable. We use DuraFlex OEM caps when your paperwork requires it and document the installation with photos so you have a record if a warranty claim ever comes up. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll review your specific warranty language before we touch anything.
Most standard DuraFlex caps are in stock locally or arrive within two to three business days. Custom caps take one to two weeks. We don’t rush the parts decision because the wrong cap size on a DuraFlex liner creates the exact wind and moisture problems you’re paying us to fix. Call (980) 580-8641 for a specific timeline.
If the crack is hairline and the crown surface is still bonded, coating works. If the crown is spalling, pulling away at the flue, or you can lift pieces by hand, it’s a rebuild. The camera scan and a few close-up photos tell us which one you need. Most New York City homes with original clay crowns and a DuraFlex liner need either coating or a rebuild, not a patch. Call (980) 580-8641 for a free estimate.
Water gets into the flue and the chase. On a DuraFlex liner, standing moisture accelerates corrosion at the liner joints and can damage the refractory insulation, and in a freezing New York City winter, trapped water expands and cracks the crown further. The repair cost grows from hundreds to thousands once the liner itself is compromised. We’d rather show you the camera footage now than quote you a liner replacement later. Call (980) 580-8641.
