Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown in New York City: What to Know First

Copperfield chimney cap and crown work in New York City typically costs $285 to $1,900 depending on whether you need a cap replacement, crown rebuild, or custom multi-flue fabrication, and most jobs are completed in a single visit once parts arrive. We’re Emberly Chimney Cleaners, an independent Copperfield service provider, which means we diagnose and repair Copperfield products but we’re not authorized by or affiliated with the manufacturer. If you own a Copperfield cap or crown and something’s not right – rust bleeding down the chase, a crown that’s spalling, a cap that’s lifted in a storm – call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll tell you exactly what we’d need to look at before anyone schedules anything.

How Copperfield Products Fail, and How We Fix Them

The Copperfield failures we see in New York City homes are predictable once you’ve repaired a few hundred. Here’s what we find, series by series, and what we do about it.

  • Copperfield stainless caps with riveted screen cages: rivet fatigue. The screen cage on Copperfield’s standard stainless cap line is riveted to the lid frame, and after five to seven New York winters the expansion-contraction cycle works those rivets loose. The screen doesn’t fall out all at once; it starts to rattle. A homeowner hears it on windy nights and assumes the cap is loose. It’s actually the screen. Fix: we remove the cage, replace the rivets with stainless hardware, and re-seat the screen with roof-rated sealant at the lid junction. If the rivet holes have wallowed out, we replace the cage assembly rather than patch it.
  • Copperfield copper caps: galvanic corrosion at the chase cover seam. This is a New York City-specific problem. Copper caps installed on galvanized chase covers without a proper isolation barrier set up a galvanic pair, and the zinc in the chase cover sacrifices itself. We see copper caps that look fine from the street with the chase cover underneath turning to white powder and pinholing through. Fix: we pull the cap, inspect the chase cover, replace the cover if corrosion has compromised it, and install a stainless or aluminum chase cover with a dielectric break to stop the reaction. The cap usually doesn’t need replacing, which surprises people.
  • Copperfield multi-flue caps: wind-driven rain penetration at the center seam. Multi-flue caps spanning two or three flues rely on a center stiffener rib with a gasketed joint. On taller New York City rowhouse chimneys with full wind exposure off the East River or Hudson, that gasket compresses unevenly, and we find water staining inside the outermost flue liner. The liner usually survives; the cap joint doesn’t. Fix: we disassemble the cap at the joint, replace the gasket with a closed-cell neoprene of the same thickness, and re-torque the seam fasteners to factory spec before re-sealing.
  • Copperfield masonry crowns: freeze-thaw spalling at the drip edge. A Copperfield crown is only as good as the masonry it sits on. In New York City, the freeze-thaw cycle is brutal on crowns with insufficient overhang or no drip groove. Water gets under the crown edge, freezes, and pops the bottom lip off in chunks. We find crown fragments in gutters and on flat roofs all through the five boroughs every spring. Fix: we grind the failed edge back to sound material, form a proper drip edge with a 2-inch overhang, and re-coat the full crown with a flexible acrylic crown sealer, not a patch of mortar.
  • Copperfield chimney caps on clay liners with failed mortar joints: the cap is fine, the liner under it isn’t. This is the one we want every Copperfield owner to hear. More often than not, when we’re called out for “cap trouble” on an older New York City chimney, the cap is actually doing its job. The real problem is a broken flue liner joint three feet down, and the cap gets blamed because water shows up in the firebox. Fix: we run a camera down the flue (Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires it on every visit), show you exactly where the joint has opened, and then we price the liner repair separately from any cap work. You don’t need a new cap just because your liner is leaking.

The common thread: on a Copperfield chimney in New York City, the cap and the crown are a system with the chase cover, the liner, and the masonry. We fix the system, not one piece of it in isolation.

Our Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Process

Our Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Process

Every Copperfield job follows the same sequence, and we put it in writing before anyone climbs a ladder.

  1. 1
Call and live answer. You reach a person, not a voicemail. You describe the symptom – rust streaking, rattling, water in the firebox, crown fragments in the gutter. We ask what model Copperfield cap you have if you know it.
  2. 2
Camera inspection. We arrive, run an NFPA 211 Level 2 camera scan down the flue and a visual inspection of the cap, crown, and chase cover from the roof. You see the footage. Corrine Halstead has shown every one of these videos to a homeowner since she started, because the camera doesn’t soften what it finds. Neither do we.
  3. 3
Written price and scope. Before any work begins, you get a written itemized price covering parts and labor, the exact scope, and the warranty in writing. This is Haven Standard Clause 1. No “well, it depends once we get in there.” If the scope changes, the written price changes only after you see why and approve it.
  4. 4
Parts decision. For Copperfield caps and crowns, we use OEM parts where they’re available and economically sensible. Where Copperfield OEM pricing runs 40 to 60 percent higher than an equivalent aftermarket part with the same material spec, we quote both and let you choose. For crowns, the sealer and forming materials come from our regular suppliers; there’s no such thing as a “Copperfield crown,” and anyone telling you there is is selling you a label.
  5. 5
The repair. We do the work, photograph every stage, and at completion run a final camera pass if the flue was involved, or a water test on crown and chase cover work where weather permits.
  6. 6
You walk away with a documented record. Photos, footage, the written scope, the written price, and the written warranty. Every Copperfield job since 2009 has ended this way. That’s 38,000+ chimneys with documentation behind each one.

What Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in New York City

Here’s what we quote on most Copperfield jobs in New York City. These are real numbers from our pricing across the five boroughs, not “call for a quote” placeholders.

  • Standard Copperfield stainless cap replacement: $285 to $525 installed, depending on flue size and roof access.
  • Copperfield copper cap (single flue): $600 to $950 installed; the premium is the copper itself.
  • Copperfield multi-flue cap spanning two or three flues: $800 to $1,400 installed, custom-welded to your flue spacing.
  • Crown repair with re-coat (standard single-chimney crown): $350 to $800 depending on condition and edge rebuild.
  • Full crown rebuild with form, rebar, and top-coat: $900 to $1,900 when the old crown has lost structural integrity.

What moves the price: roof pitch and access, how many flues the cap spans, whether the chase cover also needs replacement, and whether your crown needs edge rebuild or full teardown. We quote it in writing before work starts, and if you bring us a competitor’s written estimate for the same scope, we’ll give you a free second opinion on whether it’s fair, and what it leaves out. Call (980) 580-8641 for an exact number.

Why New York City Homeowners Call Emberly Chimney Cleaners for Copperfield Work

Why New York City Homeowners Call Emberly Chimney Cleaners for Copperfield Work

Most of our Copperfield customers in New York City were referred by someone else, or found us because the last company wouldn’t put a price on paper. We don’t work that way. Every Copperfield cap and crown job starts with a written price, written scope, and written warranty – before any work begins. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed, their license numbers are displayed on every page, and you get a text when they’re on the way. We’ve documented every job with camera footage since 2009, and that practice became Clause 4 of the Haven Standard. If a Copperfield cap or crown repair isn’t done right within 365 days, we make it right. And if your chimney needs something else – a DuraFlex liner, a HeatShield repair, a Gelco sealer – we handle those too, so we’re not trying to sell you a cap when your real problem is the flue underneath it.
