Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Famco damper repair in New York City typically runs $275-$640 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the full throat assembly. Most jobs are completed the same visit because we stock common Famco parts on the truck. Owners usually discover the problem the first cold night of fall: the damper won’t close, won’t open, or the handle spins without catching anything.

We’re an independent service provider, not a Famco dealer or affiliate. But we’ve installed and repaired enough Famco dampers across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island to know exactly which parts fail, which models cross-reference, and what it should cost to fix. Corrine Halstead has been looking at Famco dampers since before the current generation of trapezoid-style plates became standard in New York City rowhouses and co-ops.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco makes four damper lines we see regularly in New York City chimneys: the standard throat damper (cast iron, poker or cable operated), the top-sealing damper (cable runs up the flue), the lock-top damper, and the older rectangular slide damper found in pre-1980s fireplaces. Each uses different replacement parts, and they don’t generally cross-fit.

The most common confusion we see: a homeowner orders a “Famco damper kit” online, gets a top-sealing unit, and their existing housing is a throat-mount cast iron frame. The part arrives, doesn’t sit in the opening, and now they’ve got a restocking fee and a chimney that still doesn’t seal. If you can read the model number off the damper frame or the original install paperwork, that solves it in thirty seconds. If you can’t, we’ll identify it by measuring the throat opening and checking the mounting pattern. For most Famco throat dampers, the critical measurement is the inside width of the damper frame, not the fireplace opening. That’s the number most DIY orders get wrong.

On the parts side, we stock genuine Famco replacement plates, cables, and handle assemblies for the common sizes. For older discontinued models, we’ll often recommend a DuraFlex or HeatShield-compatible component if the OEM part is gone and the aftermarket option matches the specs. We’ll tell you which is which and why before we order anything.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
  • The handle turns but the damper plate barely moves. The cable clamp at the handle pivot has slipped, or the cable has stretched. On cable-operated Famco units, this is the single most common failure we see in New York City, especially in buildings where the fireplace gets used three or four nights a week in winter.
  • The damper won’t stay closed. The cast iron plate has warped from years of direct heat, or the pivot pins have worn oval. A warped plate won’t seal even with a new cable. We check the plate flatness before quoting a cable replacement, because installing a new cable on a warped plate is throwing money away.
  • Cold air pours down the chimney all summer. That’s a damper that isn’t seating. You’ll feel it strongest on hot, humid days when the stack effect pulls conditioned air up the flue. A failing Famco damper can cost you a measurable amount in cooling bills in New York City summers.
  • The damper plate is stuck open or stuck closed. Creosote buildup has glued the plate to the frame, or the hinge has seized. This is more common in fireplaces that burn green wood or haven’t been swept in years. We’ve unstuck plenty, but if the plate is rusted through, replacement beats repair.
  • You hear rattling or scraping when the handle moves. The cable housing has pulled loose from its mounting bracket inside the smoke chamber, or the plate itself is loose on one pivot. Loose hardware in a firebox is a fire-safety issue, not just an annoyance.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Famco damper repair costs in New York City, installed:

  • Cable replacement: $275-$390. We match the cable length and housing spec to your existing unit, replace the handle-side clamp, and test the full throw before we leave.
  • Damper plate replacement: $320-$490. Cast iron plate matched to your frame size. Includes pivot pin inspection and replacement if needed.
  • Full throat damper assembly replacement: $480-$640. New frame, plate, and cable. Needed when the old frame is cracked, rusted through, or the mounting tabs have broken off in the brickwork.

The range depends on access. Some New York City fireplace throats are tight and awkward; some require working around an existing fireplace door frame. You’ll get a written price with the parts and labor separated before any work starts, and the installed part is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it doesn’t work properly, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the identification part yourself: read the model number, measure the frame width, and check whether the cable is visibly disconnected at the handle. What you shouldn’t do is attempt a damper replacement inside a live firebox. The damper sits directly above the firebox opening. Reaching it means working inside the firebox, around sharp damper brackets and masonry edges, often at an awkward angle. A dropped cast iron plate will crack firebrick or worse.

We also strongly recommend not ordering a replacement damper online before someone has inspected the existing frame. The mounting tabs are the failure point nobody sees until the old plate is off. In older New York City fireplaces, those tabs are often rusted thin or already broken, and a new plate won’t mount securely. When we quote, we check the frame, the tabs, the cable, and the throat dimensions before we order or install anything. That’s the difference between one visit and three. Call us at (980) 580-8641 if you want the damper looked at by someone who will show you exactly what’s failing before asking you to spend a dollar.
