Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The New York City Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible crown repair systems throughout New York City, with most full repairs running between $1,400 and $2,600 installed depending on crown condition, access, and footage of material needed. We keep HeatShield’s CeaseFill crown coat and the standard joint sealant on our trucks, so most repairs in the five boroughs are completed in a single visit. Where it gets discovered: a homeowner calls us for a sweep, our camera comes up through the flue, and the crown shows hairline cracking that’s let water into the masonry below. Or water stains appear on the ceiling near the chimney chase after a heavy rain, and the crown is where the trail starts.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
The HeatShield crown repair system is designed for masonry chimney crowns, not factory-built metal caps. If your crown is mortar or concrete, HeatShield’s CeaseFill crown coat will bond to it. If your crown is a metal chase top, this isn’t the product for you, and we’ll tell you that plainly before quoting anything. HeatShield manufactures their crown repair materials in a single formulation rather than model-number series like their flue liner systems. So you won’t find a “Crown 4” or “Series 2” label. What matters is the condition class: Cracked crown (Class 1 repair, fill and seal), spalling crown with exposed aggregate (Class 2, resurface), or structural crown loss (Class 3, rebuild before coating). Emberly Chimney Cleaners is an independent service provider and isn’t affiliated with HeatShield, but we’ve installed their materials in New York City chimneys for years and stock their product because it outperforms generic cement crown coats in freeze-thaw conditions, which is exactly what a Brooklyn brownstone crown goes through every February.
Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

- Hairline cracks in the crown surface – This is the first failure point. Water seeps into hairline cracks, freezes, and expands. Each freeze widens the crack slightly more. New York City winters give crowns roughly 20 to 30 freeze-thaw cycles per season, which is why unprotected crowns fail faster here than in warmer markets.
- Spalling on the crown edges – When the crown’s outer lip starts flaking off in chunks, the original cement mix was probably too wet when poured. That’s a manufacturing issue from the original build, not a HeatShield problem. The fix still matters: exposed aggregate lets water pool, and pooled water migrates inward.
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the chimney – The crown is the first suspect, but not the only one. Stains could also mean failed flashing or a cracked liner. Our camera inspection tells us which one it is before we touch anything.
- White mineral deposits on the crown or the brick below it – We call that efflorescence. Water is moving through the masonry and leaving salt behind on the surface. It doesn’t mean the crown failed yet, but it means water is getting somewhere it shouldn’t.
- Pieces of crown material in the gutter or on the roof – The most obvious one, and the one homeowners in Manhattan and Queens find first. If you can see crown pieces at the roof line, the crown has been failing for at least a season. It rarely happens all at once.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s where pricing lands in New York City. A HeatShield CeaseFill crack repair, where the crown is still solid and recovery is mostly cosmetic, runs $1,400 to $1,700. A full resurface on a spalling crown runs $1,800 to $2,600. A crown rebuild before coating, which requires rebuilding the concrete form and letting it cure before HeatShield goes on, runs $2,600 to $3,800. These prices include labor, materials, surface prep, and the full written warranty. What affects the range: access (scaffolding on a four-story walkup costs more than a single-story side roof), the square footage of crown surface, and the severity of the crack pattern. You get a flat written price before we start, per Haven Standard Clause 1, and a documented photo record of the crown before, during, and after, per Clause 4. No hourly bills. No change orders after we begin.
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do from the ground: look for efflorescence on the brick, check for water stains inside, and see if the crown looks visibly cracked or missing material. That’s real, useful information, and bringing it to the conversation helps us price your job faster. What you shouldn’t do: climb onto a New York City roof with a bucket of crown coat. Crown repair means working at height, often on a pitch, with a wet masonry product. Falls from roofs and serious masonry failures aren’t worth the few hundred dollars you’d save. We also run a camera down the flue on every visit because a crown failure is rarely the only thing going on. If the water reached the flue liner, you’ll want to know before you spend on a crown repair that protects a falling-apart liner. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll come look. The estimate is free, and we’ll show you the camera footage ourselves.
FAQs
In New York City’s freeze-thaw climate, a HeatShield crown repair held up well in our experience, with most jobs still intact at 10 to 15 years, and lighter crack repairs often going longer. The deciding factor is whether the original crown was sound enough to bond to, which is why we won’t coat a crown that’s structurally failing without rebuilding it first. Call (980) 580-8641 and we’ll tell you which condition class your crown falls into.
Yes, if the crown is cracked but structurally sound, HeatShield’s CeaseFill coat is the repair. If the crown has lost structural integrity, spalling deeply, or broken away at the corners, a rebuild is the honest answer, and coating a structurally failed crown just means tearing it off again in three years. Call (980) 580-8641 for an exact assessment and written quote.
A crack repair and recoat on a New York City rowhouse crown is a single-day job, typically four to six hours including surface prep and cleanup. A full crown rebuild adds a day for the concrete to cure before the HeatShield material goes on. Both options come with a written price before we start.
We do. HeatShield CeaseFill and their joint sealant are on our trucks right now, along with DuraFlex and Gelco materials for liner work. If your crown job reveals a liner problem, we can address both in the same visit. Call (980) 580-8641 for a free estimate and we’ll show you what we find.
